‘tattar...rattat’ is a new production by Orkest De Ereprijs in collaboration with Cypriot composer Andys Skordis and soprano Elisabeth Hetherington (winner of Dutch Classical Talent 2020 & De Muziekprijs 2024).
‘tattar...rattat’ is a palindrome, and somehow the leap from Baroque to contemporary and back can also be seen as a palindrome. It comes from James Joyce and essentially means ‘knocking on the door.’ Like knocking on the door to somehow wake us up.
The threads of early music can be found when you pull apart even the most avant-garde styles of music. This is where we find ourselves: exploring how time, past and present can merge into one entity.
‘tattar...rattat’ is part of a cycle of pieces Andys Skordis composed especially for Elisabeth Hetherington and Orchestra De Ereprijs. The 17th-century air de cour would serve as a thread between one scene and the next. Each of Skordis' vignettes will use different combinations of instruments, changes in light, positions in the hall and movement to explode out of the sonorous texture. ‘tattar...rattat’ is a ritual, a process in which we enter time and move continuously, reflecting the past in the present and vice versa. A ceremony where Elizabeth Hetherington becomes the shaman, leading us through the different stages of the ritual, guiding us in this environment where we float between past and present, connecting us to forgotten parts of our lives and creating new parts to experience.
