Opening concert 32nd Young Composers Meeting: The Tale of Two Continents
Orpheus Apeldoorn
Sitor Situmorang, born on Lake Toba and passed away in Apeldoorn, is one of Indonesia's greatest poets. His life reflects Indonesia's turbulent history: from traditional Batak culture and colonial times to the struggle for freedom and democratic reforms. His work and life are honored in an evening filled with literature and music.
During the opening concert of the 32nd Young Composers Meeting, the De Ereprijs orchestra will perform seven new compositions written by young Indonesian composers, all former participants of the annual Young Composers Meeting (YCM) in Apeldoorn. These works are based on poems from bilingual collections by Sitor Situmorang, one of Indonesia's greatest poets, who was born on Lake Toba and died in Apeldoorn.
Under the baton of conductor Edo Frenkel, Orkest De Ereprijs will take the audience on a musical journey. Soloists are the renowned Indonesian soprano Bernadeta Astari and tenor Georgi Sztojanov. In addition to the music, poet Robin Block, who has family ties to Indonesia, and cellist Emir Aditya, who lives in the Netherlands, will interweave their contemporary interpretations with the work of Sitor.
This special performance highlights the historical and cultural ties between the Netherlands and Indonesia. The project celebrates not only the legacy of Sitor Situmorang, but also the role of music, poetry, and collaboration in connecting continents, generations, and traditions.
The annual YCM is an initiative of Orkest De Ereprijs. Fourteen young professional composers aged 30 and under are given the opportunity to work on their own compositions, thereby developing their talents, expanding their knowledge, and building their network.
During this week, the participants rehearse the work they have been working on for the YCM. They are supervised by experienced composers and attend lectures and individual lessons. The intensive week concludes with a concert. The most promising participants, as judged by an independent jury of leading composers, are awarded a paid composition commission as encouragement. The compositions will be performed by Orkest De Ereprijs and singers in training at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague during the Closing Concert at Theater Gigant in Apeldoorn.
The 32nd edition will take place from March 1-6, 2025.
